Friends of the MFN: Giving Tuesday & Year-End Appeal
Cultivating Community Support: A Strategic Multi-Phase Email Fundraising Campaign
For the Friends of the Medford Family Network (MFN), I designed and authored a multi-phase email campaign that fundamentally transformed their “giving season” results. Recognizing that modern fundraising requires a donor journey rather than a single “ask,” I developed a strategic three-part narrative arc: beginning with a
The Challenge
The “Friends of the MFN” is the fundraising arm of the network, and their end-of-year success is vital to keeping MFN’s programs free for all families. The challenge was to create a narrative that felt urgent yet grateful, standing out in crowded inboxes during the busiest fundraising time of the year. We needed to bridge the gap between “thanking our supporters” and “asking for continued investment” without losing the warm, community-centered tone that defines the MFN.
The Approach
Rather than sending isolated emails, I developed a consistent messaging thread: “Celebrating our MFN and how you make it possible.” This allowed us to build momentum over several weeks:
-
The “Gratitude” Phase (Pre-Giving Tuesday): We started with a focus on impact and storytelling. By leading with gratitude, we primed our audience to feel like partners in MFN’s success before the official “ask” arrived.
-
The “Action” Phase (Giving Tuesday): On the day of, the messaging shifted to high-energy mobilization, emphasizing the collective power of the community to sustain these vital services.
-
The “Legacy” Phase (Year-End Appeal): The final message transitioned to a holiday-centric appeal, focusing on the long-term difference MFN makes for Medford families and the importance of starting the new year with a strong foundation.
- Custom Video & Animation: To grab attention in a crowded holiday inbox, I produced custom video elements in Canva, exporting them as high-quality GIFs. These animations added a sense of life and “celebration” to the emails, highlighting community moments and driving higher engagement.
The Impact: By the Numbers
The strategic shift in messaging, combined with a professional and unified brand presence, yielded immediate and record-breaking results for the Friends of the MFN. By creating a frictionless donation experience and a compelling narrative arc, the campaign significantly outperformed previous years:
-
Total Raised: $17,939.00
-
Year-Over-Year Growth: A 200.8% increase compared to the $5,964.51 raised during the same period the prior year.
-
Conversion Success: The combination of clear “Call to Action” (CTA) placements and mobile-optimized design allowed the organization to triple its fundraising capacity.
